What to Expect During Your In-Home Euthanasia Appointment

You and your pet may choose any comfortable place in your home for the appointment. My goal is to provide a peaceful, gentle experience in a familiar environment where your pet feels safe and loved.

We will begin with a brief conversation about your pet's quality of life and the signs you have been seeing that indicate it may be time for a peaceful passing. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions and discuss any concerns you may have.

The first step is administering a combination of a sedative, pain reliever, and muscle relaxant under the skin. As these medications take effect, your pet will become very relaxed and eventually fall into a deep sleep. Once this level of sedation is reached, your pet will be completely unaware and comfortable.

After sufficient sedation has been achieved, I will place a potty pad under your pet's hind end to help contain any urine or stool that may be released as the body relaxes.

Next, I will shave a small area on your pet's foreleg and place a small intravenous catheter. Once the catheter is in the correct position, the final medication (euthanasia solution) will be administered. This medication gently stops your pet's breathing and heart function, allowing for a peaceful and painless passing.

Throughout the appointment, I will guide you through each step and ensure that both you and your pet are treated with compassion, dignity, and care.

Sending you strength and love,

Dr. Stacie Grannum
